The Battle for Christian Values in Western Culture

By Dr. Floyd Godfrey

In recent decades, Western civilization has witnessed a steady erosion of its Judeo-Christian foundation. As society moves further away from biblical principles, many Christians find themselves caught in a culture war that challenges not only their beliefs, but also their right to live them out publicly. During the AACC 2025 World Conference, Ambassador Sam Brownback boldly addressed this issue, stating, “You are in the battle for Western Civilization.” His message was a wake-up call to believers who are witnessing the growing cultural hostility toward biblical truth and moral conviction.

At the heart of this battle is the tension between truth and cultural acceptance. Brownback warned, “If you do the right thing, and speak truth, they will hate you.” These words echo Jesus’ own teaching in John 15:18, where He said, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.” The discomfort Christians feel when taking a stand is not a new phenomenon, but it has become increasingly pronounced in today’s climate. Brownback acknowledged this, saying, “You have to stand up. It’s uncomfortable.”

For families and church leaders, this presents a clear challenge. Parents must teach their children to discern truth in a world filled with half-truths and moral confusion. Pastors must preach biblical truth, even when it is unpopular or risks public backlash. Brownback reminded attendees that they are not alone in this struggle. “If you stand up, other people will stand up with you because of your courage,” he said. This principle of spiritual solidarity is vital in a time when isolation and fear can silence conviction.

The need for boldness is urgent, especially as the moral clarity of past generations seems to fade. Brownback observed, “The great ‘awakening’ is receding,” suggesting that the momentum of past revivals is losing ground in the face of cultural relativism. Yet, amid this retreat, God still calls His people to faithfulness. Galatians 6:9 reminds us, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

One of the most sobering thoughts Brownback shared was, “What you have stood up for, will be the gauge of judgment in heaven. Your scars will be evaluated by God and angels.” This reminder pulls believers’ focus back to the eternal. When standing for truth leads to persecution, ridicule, or even the loss of personal opportunities, it is not in vain. Heaven takes notice.

Support and community are essential in this cultural struggle. Brownback encouraged Christians to “make friends to associate with and fight together.” This calls for intentional relationships rooted in shared faith and mission. Hebrews 10:24–25 reinforces this, urging believers to “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together.” Courage is contagious, and fellowship fuels perseverance.

Despite the challenges, Brownback also acknowledged God’s sovereignty in our personal callings. “God opened doors for me,” he said. The implication is that God still opens doors today. Whether in politics, education, ministry, or family life, God positions His people to be salt and light. And as Brownback noted, “People are already watching you, to see if you shake.” Our response to cultural pressure becomes a testimony—either of faith or fear.

In this present cultural climate, believers must choose to live with conviction. As Brownback said, “When you have the praise of God, you won’t get praise from the adversary.” That contrast is clear. Christians must decide whose approval they seek and then live accordingly.

The battle for Western civilization is more than a political or cultural issue; it is a spiritual one. It calls for courage, community, and an eternal perspective. Whether you are a parent training up children in truth, or a pastor guiding your congregation through uncertain times, the call is the same: stand firm, speak truth, and trust God with the outcome.
